The microsystems applications and markets are growing rapidly and an important number of opportunities can be targeted by small companies, especially start-ups. Start-up creation in a technical field like microsystems is a very complex issue. The technology is only one part of the picture. This course shows how to position a project in the industrial value chain, to manage the intellectual property issue, to focus the applications and the markets, to define the business models of the company, the business plan of the start-up, the access to the customers, etc. The emphasis will also be put on methods to evaluate the financial potential value of the project and on negotiation approaches with financial and industrial partners. After the course, the participants will be aware of the major traps of start-up creation in the field of microsystems. Ten real case studies will be presented and analysed, coming from the major European and US microsystems start-ups.
